The Diastema Project

"There is much to be said about a gap-toothed grin."

The Diastema Project began after a conversation with my dental hygienist about the gap between my front teeth. I subsequently embarked on a year long journey to create this photographic conversation about diastema as it relates to beauty and culture.I learned that a gap in the top front teeth is common with Black folks which piqued my interest even more. I wanted to know why so many of us sport the gap. We all know someone who has one. It is a part of who we are and how we present across the diaspora..While a diastema (plural diastemata) is technically a structural defect of the palate, the "gap" has cultural and historic roots. It has been discussed in literature and served as a basis of folklore for centuries. The diastema has challenged concepts of beauty and how we think about embracing this beautiful imperfection. The Diastema Project was presented in conjunction with the University of Minnesota Research & Outreach Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
